The next generation of labour market strategies in New Zealand are emerging. They are led by networks of relevant agencies that identify gaps and opportunities, facilitate community driven innovative career projects and learn together. At the recent launch of “Capable Rotorua”, Mayor Dale Williams of Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs gave an inspiring presentation of what has been achieved in Otorohanga. Phenomenal results have been achieved by this community of less than 10,000 people. See what has happened to youth employment, business success, economic growth, youth crime etc. This is a community where the young people know they are valued. Ross Jones, Careers New Zealand Area Manager – Central North, and Brendon Gardner, Careers New Zealand Practice Leader, gave a presentation on ‘The career capable community model – how it’s working around New Zealand’. Both presentations are well worth a look if you are remotely interested in the link between employment outcomes and strategic action by agencies and communities at a local and regional level.
