A workforce census for local government across the whole of Australia is underway. There are eight pilot local governments, two of which are in WA, namely the Shire of Capel and City of Stirling. It is being coordinated by the Australian Centre for Excellence in Local Government (ACELG). State local government associations (LGAs), Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA) and the Australian Services Union (ASU) have been involved in this project throughout its development. This is a major undertaking which will greatly enhance the quality of workforce planning and monitoring. A national local government workforce strategy is also being developed.
