Many WA local governments are preparing their workforce plans under the new Integrated Planning and Reporting Framework. One question is: how well does your workforce reflect the diversity of your local community? Another is: how well do you tap into the workforce potential of your local Aboriginal community? LGMA and ACELG have produced an excellent position paper on national local government indigenous employment Closing the Gap Through Place-based Employment aims to help local governments with this aspect of their workforce planning. It includes six key actions to provide support for aboriginal employees:
- Develop managers to manage, including in diverse workforce environments
- Assisting new Indigenous employees to learn about the culture of the organisation
- Selecting and training dedicated staff to mentor and support Indigenous employees
- Building the capacity of Indigenous leadership and management roles
- Ensuring employees have the necessary foundation skills for a career in local government and that opportunities are available to improve the vocational education and training skills of Indigenous employees
- Support for Indigenous Language and Culture
